
It has been 262 days (03.02.2011) since Belgium has had an active government.
How could this be without all the rioting and general anarchy that such a notion most US politicians and media would lead us to believe would be unfolding if the same situation were to occur on this side of the pond?

“Belgium is a federal state, composed of communities and regions,” so reads the first Article of the Belgian constitution.
Broadly speaking, the powers of the Federal State cover everything connected with the public interest; foreign affairs, national defence, justice, finance, etc, while the leadership of the country is in the hands of the communities and the regions, who independently exercise their authority within their domains, even maintaining foreign relations.
The “Government” that Belgium is going without at this time is composed of 15 ministers and assorted staff. So essentially it would be like the US being without a president and the cabinet for 2/3 of a year (and counting)….
