Course Description:

Basic to intermediate web production techniques using Adobe’s Photoshop. Topics include digital imagery concepts, developing and editing pixel and vector based graphics for the web, integrating text and images, slicing web compositions to produce rollover states and creating very basic animation.

Course Goals:

To learn the processes used to develop the images required for a website of a small business or organization, while focusing on page layout, navigational buttons, color theory, typography and site structure.

Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Edit digital images for the web
  • Import and edit vector based graphics
  • Create call-to-action web banners
  • Create navigational buttons with roll-over states
  • Develop web-page layouts for client review
  • Develop redlines of page layouts for production
  • Slice and optimize images for website placement
  • Produce simple animated GiFs

USB Flash Drive:

This will be used to transfer Photoshop (PSD) files as needed.  256MB or more recommended.

Internet Access:

Current E-mail account and FTP folder access.

Students are provided 20 MB on the SCCC server which can be accessed via FTP by using the same login and password used to access the computers on campus.

Assignments:

Students are responsible for assignment information given in class or posted on the class website.

  • Assignments are listed on Class Schedule
  • Due dates are noted on each Assignment Page

Students are required to e-mail a link to each assignment to the instructor.

  • Assignments are to be placed in a folder then compressed (ZiP-ed) prior to uploading.
  • Assignments are to be uploaded via FTP to the student’s desired server.

You should be sending me a URL to a ZiP folder which contains all the files worked on in each assignment.
These files should be JPEG copies of your worked PSD files.
Please Do Not Send Full Size PSD files.

Save copies of your PSD files by the following method:

  • File > Save for Web and Devise > JPEG > Lowest
  • Save your files using proper naming conventions noted below
  • LastName-web114-a0(*assignment)-0*(assignment part).jpg (extension)
  • (replace * with appropriate value)
  • Place all of the JPEG assignment files in (1) one folder named properly.
  • LastName-web114-a0(*assignment)
  • (replace * with appropriate value)
  • ZiP folder and upload to your web114 class folder that you created on your server space.
    • To create a ZiPped folder on the Mac:
      1. Select desired folder
      2. File > Create Archive of “…” or Right-Click/Create Archive of “…”
  • Send the entire URL to me using the Contact Page form.
    • A proper submitted URL should look like this:
  • http://edison.seattlecentral.edu/~nname00/web114/LastName-web114-a0*.zip
  • (replace * with appropriate value)
  • The above is an example of an URL if you are using your student server space. You can use your own website as you please.

Final Project:

Students are expected to present a final project at the end of the quarter.

  • Project should be a site with at least three (3) functioning pages.
  • Project Site will be a culmination of the class assignments.
  • Project will comply to the decency standards of the college.


Evaluation Methods:

Final grade will be a culmination of Class Participation, Assignments and Final Project:

  • Assignments must be submitted by midnight of due date to receive full credit.
  • Assignments are graded on the 4.0 scale.
  • Assignments will be marked down 0.2 points per day they are late.
  • Final Project will be presented in class during finals week as posted.

Students are responsible for assignment information on assignment pages
Students are also responsible for assignment information given in class
