Custom Symbol Library & Icon Sprite
The following (4) items are due:
1) -a04-01.ai: (4) Custom Symbols – don’t forget to save…
Use directions from Week 04 AI Custom Shapes to Create at least (4) Custom Symbols including (but not limited to):
- menu
- user
- download
- form
Full credit for the creation of all steps shown to completion.
2) -a04-02.ai: Select Web & Custom Icons in Grid Layout
Use directions from Week 04 AI Custom Shapes to Create a 4×4 Grid with Select Icons from the Web Icons Library and the Custom Library from -a04-01.
A) Include the following (8) icons from the Web Icons Library:
- Home
- Comments
- Search
- RSS
- Plus
- Minus
- Delete
B) Add the (4) icons from your Custom Library -a04-01:
- Menu
- User
- Download
- Form
C) Create up to an additional (4) icons to complete the 4×4 Grid.
- All Icons are to have a Black fill
- There is not to be any use of White as a fill. Use the Pathfinder panel to “Minus Front from Back” to eliminate the White fill and create “negative space”
- All icons are to maintain a common style, look and feel of the existing icons
- There should not be any strokes applied to Black filled objects
- All strokes used must be “expanded” Object > Expand (as done in -a03-01)
- Do not use any existing icons (aside from those required) from the Symbols Libraries
- Do not use any symbols acquired from the web
Below is a list of suggested options:

3) Image folder containing -a04-sprite.png (Sliced icon sprite)
4) UI-icons-01.ai: A Custom Symbols Library containing all (16) sixteen of the Custom Symbols created and/or added to -a04-02.ai
Assignment Submission
Full credit for fulfilling the following correctly:
- Proper use of the naming convention
- Submitted before due time (12:00 midnight Friday)
- Full credit for the creation of all steps shown to completion
- Consistent style, look and feel of iconography
- Use of black only – no other color will be accepted
- All White fills have been converted to “negative space”
- Proper use of Guides and an assigned Guide Layer
- Shapes correctly constructed, sized and aligned
- Proper hierarchy of design elements in the Layers panel
- All objects named accordingly
- Logically grouped items
- Correctly expanded strokes (if used)
- No strokes applied to Black filled objects
- Objects properly converted to Symbols
- Symbols Library that can be imported by a third party
- Icon Sprite properly sliced and exported
Before final submission make sure all files are named properly and are being placed in a properly labeled assignment folder.
You should be sending me a ZIP’d folder containing the appropriate file(s):
- images (folder) with -a04-sprite.png
- -a04-01.ai
- -a04-02.ai
- UI-icons-01.ai (custom Symbols Library) containing all 16 icons
- Save your files using proper naming conventions noted below
- LastName-web114-a04-0*(assignment part).ai
- (replace * with appropriate value)
- LastName-web114-a04-0*(assignment part).ai
- Place the assignment file(s) in (1) one folder named properly.
- LastName-web114–a04
- (replace * with appropriate value)

- Right-click on the assignment folder and select Compress”…”
A Zip’d copy of the folder will now appear
Submitting your assignment
- You are sending the URL to your ZiP’d assignment via an eMail app of choice

Web114 – a0(assignment number) – 0(section) - In the body of the message should be a direct URL to this week’s assignment. If you are using the Edison server the URL should look somewhat like this:
